My cat Tiger and how we met

Posted by: Jenny Townsend

I have to say out of all the cats I’ve had through the years Tiger has to be the most unique. He will be two years this month but still shows no signs of growing up!

When I first met Tiger he was an over excited little ball of fur running around all over the place, climbing furniture and eating as much as he could fit in his little belly. My brother’s girlfriend Charlene had rung me to tell me they’d gotten a kitten and of course my boyfriend (James) and I went straight around to see for ourselves. My three year old niece Tayshia had gone to the zoo the day before so she decided to call him after a Tiger she’d seen which of course was called Tiger? With his stripy coat and boisterous manner he really was a Tiger except his roar needed some work – it was more like a merr without the ow.

I fell in love that day and found it hard to leave him. The next day we rang to ask if there was any more in his litter left to which Charlene replied you can have him – it turned out she was allergic to cats and had developed a rash and a sneezing fit all because of that tiny little thing that I could fit in the palm of my hand oh my two nieces would not leave the poor thing alone. We collected him that night, Tayshia was so upset to this day she still tells everyone I’m the person who took Tiger from her – even though she comes to see him as often as she can – but always seems to be more interested in my make up (which is very interesting by the way).

Of course in those days I still lived with my parents and my cat Whisky who would not allow me to have another cat (Whisky not my parents) so James took him to his home but that gave me an excuse to go and see James more often but Tiger kept annoying Jessie - their cat who is quite old at 13 years.

After a couple of months we had saved enough money to rent a flat we told our landlord we had a cat and he said he didn’t mind as long as he was a grown house cat who didn’t wander round the gardens we assured him he was (a little white lie never hurt anybody right?).

Tiger loved having his own place, on our first night James and I sat at the dinner table to eat our spaghetti Bolognaise and of course Tiger felt left out so he jumped on the table and eat all the leftovers. I’d never seen a cat eat spaghetti before. We had laminated flooring which he loved to run on and skid all over the place, he also has this thing for hair bands, he could play with them for hours, and they would always end up under the bed or the wardrobe, suffice to say I go through a lot of hair bands.

We had too much furniture in the house so the landlord helped us move it to the neighbors flat down the hall I think he realised then that Tiger was in fact a kitten and not a ‘grown cat’ like we told him but he didn’t seem to mind at that point. After sitting back down in the flat thinking it looked a little empty with some of the furniture gone I realised that Tiger had in fact also gone, running around the flat franticly looking for him my heart racing, lots of thoughts in my head he was a house cat and had never been outside what if he’d got out, I went along the hall to find my neighbors front door open and Tiger walking around in their living room sniffing the furniture – the relief that I felt then overwhelmed me. I quickly ran in grabbed my cat and ran back to my flat.

We have since moved out of the flat but some of the memories will always stay with me, like when we put our Christmas tree up we would come home to find Tiger sitting at the top like the fairy with all the baubles on the floor, and like the first time he saw snow and when he played in it he didn’t understand why he sunk – the panic in his eyes. Being woken up every day at 5am to Tigers weird girly miaow (the merr without the ow) telling us he was hungry, coming home to find our nets on the floor where he had climbed them, plants knocked over, he loved our little garden as well, one day he saw another cat out there so he went running out to chase it but got stuck on the fence half way – ha! He really showed that other cat how scary he was! We had to help him down.

I hope we have him for many years to come he’s so funny and entertaining – and loving when he wants food.

I have loads of other funny stories that I could tell you about him but I’ll save them for another time.
