Tyzzer’s disease

Tyzzer’s disease is caused by the bacterium, Bacillus piliformis. It is often associated with stress and gerbils often catch Tyzzer’s disease if they’re kept near mice and have recently been weaned. Symptoms of Tyzzer’s disease include a hunched back, a poor coat and diarrhoea and it often leads to death.

If you think your pet has Tyzzer’s disease, it’s important that he’s treated quickly. Your vet will be able to treat your gerbil with antibiotics and it may also be necessary to treat him for dehydration. For further information please contact your vet.
