OWNER'S JOY AS TORTOISE'S DASH FOR FREEDOM ENDS IN DISCOVERY

The owner of a lost tortoise has told of her joy after the escape-prone pet was discovered more than 300 miles away in Scunthorpe.

Jean Williams, 63, was distraught when her seven-year-old tortoise Edna disappeared from her home in Hucclecote, Gloucester two weeks ago.

After knocking on several doors she learned that a neighbour's visiting grandson had found it and taken it away to start a new life in Scunthorpe.

The misunderstanding has now been settled and Edna is set to return home to Mrs Williams, whose second tortoise Elsie is pining for her friend.

Mrs Williams, who works at a nursing home, said: "I'm so thankful that she's safe, but the other tortoise is not eating properly. I never thought two tortoises could be so connected!

"I found out that the lady's family had discovered her while packing up their car. The lady said she couldn't look after it, so her grandson took Edna all the way to Scunthorpe. I couldn't believe it.

"She keeps escaping - I call her Ronnie Biggs. She's ever so quick and can get out of her cage by putting her toenails over the glass.

"She even climbs the stairs if you don't watch her and isn't far behind the dogs when someone knocks on the door."
